Is it possible for other extension to override default?

My use case is that I have a custom YAML schema. using yaml.schema is working for me. I am working on a VSCode extension, it will be nice if I can override that settings inside my extension, so someone who install my extension would automatically have the yaml.schema set correctly.

Alternatively if I can set this via VSCode API it will be good enough. Any idea how this can be done?
