I noticed that when the paradox package management menu is installed and enabled, nano-emacs has some sort of conflict with it. Basically it is no longer possible to refresh and upgrade packages or to display the list of available packages.
The error message suggests that there's an issue with a "wrong argument" in the paradox package and the nano-emacs modeline.
Deleting the paradox package brings all the functionalities back to normal. It would appear that paradox does not play well with nano-modeline - not sure why.

If you're interested only in the nano emacs modeline, you might try https://github.com/rougier/nano-modeline, maybe it'll play better with paradox. In the meantime, I'll try to look into paradaox to check if I can identify the problem.
I am actually interested in most of nano emacs so that won't cut it. I did not know Paradox was no longer (actively) maintained. That's a pity..time to find alternatives since I wouldn't know how to maintain it myself.
