How to change hostname in existed snapshots?

Folks,

How can I change a hostname filed in existed snapshots?

Why? Because I had changed machine name from xxx.local to xxx.home.arpa and right now I do have a mess.

I do not think it is possible...

But simple solution is to stop using default --group-by host,paths and use explicitly for example --group-by paths or even better start using tags. With the latter you have full control and can add/remove/change tags to meet your snapshots grouping requirement. Run rustic tag --help for more details.

I disagress with you.

The first step is "merge" old snapshots under the new host, something like this:

/usr/local/bin/rustic snapshots --filter-host xxx.local --group-by host --json | jq '.[] | .snapshots.[] | .id' -r | while read _id; do doas /usr/local/bin/rustic merge --host xxx.home.arpa $_id; done

The next step is forget old snapshots, something like this:

/usr/local/bin/rustic snapshots --filter-host xxx.local --group-by host --json | jq '.[] | .snapshots.[] | .id' -r | while read _id; do doas /usr/local/bin/rustic forget $_id; done

Now, I had run forget with default policy, and as the last step /usr/local/bin/rustic prune --fast-repack.

I just created #1498 which will make it able to also change the hostname by rustic snapshots - i:

• Mark the snapshots
• Press H to change the hostname
• Press w to write the changed snapshots

This is now in main and will be included in the nightly builds

I reopened and marked the snapshot -i as answer as it might be interesting for future users.

Indeed, it is much simpler and looks not so scarry like merge.
