Keeping zypperpkg in core #14

Description

@jeff350

I recommend keeping zypperpkg as a core module rather than moving it to community support as currently planned.

zypperpkg is a virtual module providing pkg functionality for SUSE-based operating systems. While Salt is reducing the number of supported operating systems, SLES remains a commonly used enterprise Linux distribution. Maintaining zypperpkg in core aligns with Salt’s ongoing commitment to supporting SLES.

Recent updates indicate continued support for SLES:

  1. SLES remains listed as a supported operating system with full support for masters and minions.
  2. The Salt team is actively updating SLES support (salt-bootstrap#2066).

Key Reasons:

  1. Maintained SLES Support:
    SLES is widely used in enterprise settings. Keeping zypperpkg in core ensures stable, official package management for these users.

  2. Enterprise Stability:
    Removing zypperpkg introduces uncertainty for organizations relying on SLES. Keeping it in core reinforces Salt’s commitment to commonly used enterprise distributions.

  3. Consistent User Experience:
    Supported operating systems should have first-class, integrated support. Retaining zypperpkg ensures that SLES users enjoy the same reliable, core-level integration as other major distributions.
