I don't have any strong opinion, and happy to experiment with them.

Same here. I guess that the only point of attention would be to define clear rules upfront to avoid potential frustration from donators. Something related to commitment to tackle specific features and/or integrate specific algorithms. Sponsoring should not become subcontracting/outsourcing IMHO.
