border-border vs border-input for input components

I am wondering what other devs think about the default shadcn current border defaults for borders on input items. It currently defaults to border-input. Does this make the most sense? With it set this way, you really need to be careful to keep your --input and --border colors set to the same thing (or close) which is shadcn default.

In our system, we have --border set to gray-800 and --input set to black, which makes the borders disappear. It seems to me input components should use the more explicit border-border. This way, you can have more flexibility with the two vars. Is it me or does the current setup "encourages" you to keep --border and --input the same color, which defeats the purpose of having separate tokens. Are there something I am missing? Anyone else change border-input to border-border on input components?

Question: Is the --input token not meant to be a surface color, but instead the border color for inputs? If the latter, then it shouldn't it be explicit --input-border? I realize we can make shadcn our own and do whatever we want, but I am trying to minimize maintenance and optimize compatibility going forward.
