Is there a reason createGlobalSession takes so long?

Calling slang::createGlobalSession() takes a really long time. In my Debug build, particularly with thread sanitizer on it takes 3500ms. Without address sanitizer on or in Release mode it takes about 300ms. That's still quite a long time. What is it doing? Is it really necessary? Because that's a long time to wait (3500ms) when restarting, as I do often.

The time is mostly spent in deserializing the precompiled builtin core module, which defines every type and intrinsic supported by the language. The library is gigantic, and is about 20MB in size in serialized form. It won't be easy to make this process significantly faster, without a complete redesign of how ASTs and IRs are serialized/deserialized, or a large scale refactor of the core module to split it into different pieces so different area of functionality is grouped in its own module that gets deserialized on-demand.
