Failed backup notification: Signal Backups (beta) was enabled by default, but its settings page is unreachable

Bug description

I use the Chat backup (to file) in a schedule, as shown in the screenshot below. It has been working just fine.

This is accessed from the Chats section of Signal's settings:

That is the only backup configuration screen I could find in the app, until...

I started receiving failed backup notifications! I checked my backup settings and there's nothing wrong with it — it's still producing the expected files.

Activating the notification takes me to this page:

As you can see, "Signal Backups (beta)" is scheduled to run daily by default, but was never able to complete it. I have never even seen this page before.

If I press the Back button at the top (to see where this comes from), it takes me to the Chat backups page I showed earlier.

To shut it down, I just set the backup frequency to "manual".

Hi! Could you please post a debug log?

What you're seeing is the new remote backups management screen but you absolutely should not have automatically gotten placed into the free tier. It's not even enabled on the production server or in remote config, AND even if it was it should only ever enable via manual user action.

Now I remember that these failed backup notifications only started a few days ago. Coincidentally, it began shortly after I had enabled chat backups to disk — I hadn't configured any form of backup until then.

I'm getting the exact same behaviour. Since a few days, every morning I'm waking up with an error message "Backup failed". I did not change anything. I didn't even know there was backup functionality in Signal.

I also have this issue. I have never used backups. I get this notification every day, quite annoying.

I have never enabled backups or changed any settings since I started using Signal. I am getting this same error message several times per day.
