Hey @I4CE41, thanks for reporting. This error means that you don't have space available in your hard drive to be able to update Spyder to a more recent version. So, you need to free some space (at least 1Gb) for the update to work as expected.

@mrclary, I think we should catch this error and show a message to tell users that there's not enough space available to perform the update.

I have a few concerns.

1. The OP context must be downloading the lock file for Spyder Updater, which is only 33kB. Also of note is that the Spyder runtime lock file is only 58kB. So if there is truly no disk space for 33kB, then I'm not sure how the user's computer even functions at all.
2. While we could check disk space for these lock file downloads, I'm not sure how useful that is because of how small they are. The real concern would be the disk space required to update the Spyder Updater environment and the Spyder runtime environment. These are both conda operations and there is no way of anticipating which packages will actually need to be downloaded. Additionally, we have no way of knowing how much space will be required for uncompressing the downloaded packages. This could be anywhere from a few MBs up to about 1GB.
3. I notice that the "standalone" Spyder runtime environment is located in C:\Users\Hp\AppData\Local\spyder-6\launch_spyder\envs\spyder-runtime, which is not the expected installation location. It should be C:\Users\Hp\AppData\Local\spyder-6\envs\spyder-runtime. How did the extra directory level launch_spyder get inserted?

@I4CE41 Can you tell me how you installed Spyder? Did you do anything "custom"?

Given the recent false-positive standalone check in Anaconda distributions (#25533, #25549), I'm concerned that there may be some other underlying issues at play.
