are Virtual Ports supported under Windows

Are Virtual Ports supported under Windows?
They are working fine in MacOS, but under windows, when I try to open either, I see:

error: MidiInWinMM:: openVirtualPort: cannot be implemented in Windows MM MIDI API!
and
error: MidiOutWinMM:: openVirtualPort: cannot be implemented in Windows MM MIDI API!

This is under Window 10.

This is a limitation of Windows. If it's a limitation in Windows, I wonder how loopMIDI is able to achieve it?

For those interested, Microsoft just released an update to their MIDI2 developer preview that includes a virtual midi driver.

For anybody else interested - I'm told Windows MIDI team is looking at an insider build by end of year, and if feedback is good, retail 1st quarter 2025.

This would require someone write an API for Windows MIDI Services, which is now available in Canary Builds of Windows but technically not public yet. I may be mistaken, but I don't believe WMS will make it to Windows 10.
