Fade In not working?

I'm sorry for the brief question — but if we don't provide a placeholder image to the element, should FadeIn happen automatically? That's what I'm taking from the docs but it doesn't seem to work, my images are just flashing up when they've loaded which isn't great. I appreciate any help and apologies for the brevity of this issue.
