.chezmoiexternal support for private repos?

I read through the documentation, but I could not find any clear answer.
Can I use a private repo in .chezmoiexternal setup?

I setup dotfiles to rely on 3 different setups (base, powerful and kids) and also features that can be plugged into any of them, and I was wondering if I can have a kid's setup that is private?

Yes, but you'll need to use an SSH repo URL and configure your SSH private key before chezmoi tries to clone the repo.

Brilliant thank you for the quick response, I setup the ssh key at the first run of chezmoi apply, at what point external run? , If I remember correctly another discussion I should use

chezmoi apply --exclude=externals

and then run it again without it, or is there a better way?

You can use stat to see if the SSH private key is present, and only include the external if it is. For example, in .chezmoiexternal.toml.tmpl:
