What is the correct way to template declarative packages?

I have tried setting up a package file at path .chezmoidata/packages.yaml.tmpl but I receive the error that `chezmoi: ____/.local/share/chezmoi/.chezmoidata/packages.yaml.tmpl: .tmpl: unknown format. It seems that this particular file can't be a template and I don't see examples at a glance on GitHub of people using .chezmoitemplates for anything in .chezmoidata. How should I handle this or is it unsupported as of now?

.chezmoidata can never be templated. Take a look at halostatue/dotfiles (in particular, .chezmoidata/roles and any templates that use them) for how I do this.

Hmm, so you basically end up rewriting the declarative package feature using your own data files if I'm reading it right? Is the chezmoi package management even a special feature or is that just an example of scripts and data in use together? I thought it was an actual supported use case but now that I think about it, it's not really doing anything special...

chezmoi has no package management except what you write.
