Best way to keep Git subdirectory updated?

Often experiencing a scenario where only a subfolder of a Git repo is needed and wanted e.g. with themes. Tracking the individual theme files in .chezmoiexternal.toml.tmpl one by one would be cumbersome. Cloning the entire repo is also not doable as especially themes typically have to be in a subfolder like .config/application/themes.
filter.command is only valid for files/archives so can’t be used here right?

Help would be much appreciated!

You can use the include and exclude variables in .chezmoiexternal, for example this is how I exclude stuff that I don't want from oh-my-zsh:

Cheers, but those are archives.
I mean sth like https://github.com/catppuccin/bat, where I would only need the themes subfolder, but still would like to keep it up-to-date.

Use GitHub's automatic archive creation: the archive is https://github.com/catppuccin/bat/archive/master.tar.gz.

You'd need to have a run_onchange_after script that includes the mtime and/or hash content of the directory.

See #4364 (comment) for a recommendation on how, and you'd be doing something like:
