It has been reported (and I have noticed that in the past, too) that pdfpres can become very slow when using certain effects in the PDF document. I noticed it on transparency. The reporter said it gets worse when showing presentations exported from Powerpoint.
Have to investigate further. At the moment, the only thing that comes to my mind is allowing to choose another rendering backend such as mupdf.
