Problem description

I'm setting up ZFSBootMenu on a new Framework 13 laptop. The prebuilt ZBM image has been installed to the EFI. Within the ZBM shell I cannot use the laptop's keyboard. No key presses work on the built-in keyboard. A USB keyboard plugged in works fine.

The Framework's keyboard works fine otherwise (in the BIOS, in multiple Linux distributions, etc).

I believe the laptop presents its keyboard as a PS/2 keyboard which uses the i8042 linux driver. I checked dmesg within ZBM and I can see the i8042 driver being loaded so I'm not sure what else could be going on.

Steps to reproduce

1. Boot ZBM on a Framework 13 laptop.
2. Type on the keyboard.
3. Nothing happens.
4. Plug in a USB keyboard.
5. Type on the USB keyboard -- that works.

If I boot ZBM and do cat /proc/bus/input/devices I can see the same "AT Translated Set 2 keyboard". The only difference is that the Handlers line is just "sysrq kbd" and the KEY= line is different. It seems to be detecting the keyboard fine, it just doesn't work for some reason.

I'm wondering if the evdev module is necessary for this to work but am not sure.

An update, I built ZBM from source and then the keyboard worked fine. Checking the image to see what was different, I saw the kernel I built was 6.12. I had previously gotten the prebuilt image from https://get.zfsbootmenu.org/efi and that is kernel 6.6. I then looked and saw you had a prebuilt release in github that used kernel 6.12 so I tried that one and that one also worked. So it seems like there was some change made between kernels 6.6 and 6.12 that is necessary to get the keyboard working on this laptop.

There are systems that work better with either 6.1 or 6.6; 6.12 has had regressions for various users. It's (relatively) easy for us to ship releases with different kernels, so we started to do so with the 3.0.0 release. https://get.zfsbootmenu.org/ is set to default to the Linux 6.6 release - that seems to work the best for 99% of users.
