Add Codex CLI Support as an External Agent

Hey there! Would love to use codex cli directly in Zed, like it is right now with Claude and Gemini.
Gpt-5 rocks, and would love to use that in my favourite IDE

I'm absolutely loving the integration of Claude Code into Zed - it's so well done. If we also had access to openai models in Zed it would be a game changer. At present, I'm constantly switch tools. I want to just settle into Zed and not keeping switching my tooling.

I've been switching from Vscode > Cursor > Windsurf > Zed > Vscode + CLI and right now a Codex CLI integration would be the last piece to just back to Zed and settle here.

I've been switching from Vscode > Cursor > Windsurf > Zed > Vscode + CLI and right now a Codex CLI integration would be the last piece to just back to Zed and settle here.

Managed to get it working using a combination of codex-acp and zed's external agent, so far it's a bit messy and I did not succeed in giving it write permissions but it's a start.

Is there any progress on this since the ACP was released? Would really like to use Codex natively with the editor.
