Welcome to the View Assist Wiki

View Assist provides visual feedback for the Home Assistant Assist voice assistant using a collection of different automations, custom sentences, scripts, and extensions with the view being displayed on any Android device. The project is at proof-of-concept (POC) phase but is fully functional.

WARNING I am not a programmer I am just someone who knows just enough to be dangerous. I am 100% certain that better ways exist than the way I am doing things and I am hoping that the HA community will continue to help improve this project through code submissions and comments in the issues section.

The information in this repo is separated into different subdirectories with additional readmes in each. This project is designed so that you can pick and choose the parts that you want for your needs. The custom sentences can be modified for those who may only be interested in voice only. The dashboard views may be interesting to others who are writing their own custom sentences.

UDPATE: I've been made aware of a really cool device and I've been working on getting it to work with View Assist. The Lenovo Thinksmart device is a nice Android tablet with a nice sounding speaker at an unbelievably low price (~$40 USD). https://amzn.to/3POGKW3

This Wiki is a work in progress with more information to come. This notice will be removed when everything is fully documented. Please excuse the mess until then

Updates

April 18 2024

Decided that it may be wise to include some status updates as if you look at the file upload dates it appears that the project is not active. Nothing could be farther from the truth. As it stands now, some major enhancements have been implemented. Some of these include:

* Ability to control displays individually
* Modes have been enabled as well as do not disturb
* Ability to include voice only satellites both with onboard wake word (eg ESP32) and with HA handling the wake words (eg anything using Stream Assist)
* Additional custom sentences for media playback, volume control, weather forecast, shopping list, setting alarms and reminders, and others

The delay in posting is due to the need to tighten things up and reduce the amount of effort required for users to implement and to better handle errors. I have made a lot of progress on this front and hope that I will be able to release the enhanced version soon
