Android Studio With Plugins

I was able to get PyCharm and IDEA with IdeaVIM using this project. However, I couldn't get Android Studio with IdeaVIM no matter how I tried. The README states that this project supports Android Studio, but it does not provide an example. I would appreciate it if you provide an example.

Hi! What did you try and what errors did you get? In theory you should just be able to pass the android-studio derivation to buildIdeWithPlugins.

Does Android Studio in nixpkgs support having plugins added?
It's possible that it doesn't. I haven't actually tested this. This flake in theory supports Android Studio, but if Android Studio in nixpkgs doesn't support plugins...

The PR that added Android support to this flake is #142 - maybe @clement-songis knows more?

I can't verify right now, but IIRC jetbrains.plugins.addPlugins doesn't support Android Studio because it is packaged differently from the other Jetbrains IDEs.

If so, we should address this in Nixpkgs and/or implement an Android Studio specific withPlugins passthru.

I tried some cheap tricks like overriding pkgs.android-studio to set pname on it, but to no avail as well.

It seems to be the case that jetbrains.plugins.addPlugins doesn't support Android Studio. It seems that the Android Studio derivation is old, because now the convention is to use pname and version instead of name. How do you think I should proceed with this? Should I create an issue at the Nixpkgs repo? Or is it better to figure out a solution specific to Android Studio in its current form and include it in this repo?

Yeah I think an issue there would be good, I don't know who maintains Android Studio, but it's not the JetBrains team. It would probably make sense for them to switch to the builder we recently refactored, unless Google has some very changes that make it incompatible.

The Nixpkgs issue kinda stalled. Should I post something like "did you have the chance to check this?" type of comment? Or will this be too pushy?

I don’t think a polite follow-up would be too pushy.
If you have the time and the skills, you can open a pull request, but don’t bother, maintainers probably have more important things to handle.
I’ll take a closer look at the problem when I have a bit of free time, but for now it’s complicated.

I remember looking at Android Studio's definition in Nixpkgs and it was way out of my league.
I checked again now to make sure, and indeed it's way out of my league lol.

I think what's needed is someone to either:

1. implement an android-studio specific addPlugins or withPlugins function
2. or, port the android-studio package to the jetbrains build-helper functions

IDK why it was originally packaged without using the jetbrains functions, maybe it's intentional, or maybe it's just historic baggage. It'd be great if those "in the know" could comment on this, as it'd save people from working on an ultimately doomed port.

I've mentioned in passing before, so I'll say it again: the addPlugins function would probably make more sense as a passthru function added onto each package, rather than an entirely separate function. Think jetbrains.idea.withPlugins [ ... ] or android-studio.withPlugins [ ... ]. Mostly off topic here, only mentioning for context.

I agree. I was hoping that by mentioning the maintainers on the Nixpkgs issue, they can explain the reasoning behind Android Studio being packaged separately. But that didn't work out unfortunately.
