Building with Vite 8 Hangs Completely on Linux

Describe the bug

As title describes, buidling with Vite 8 hands completely on Linux. Previously this worked on Mac and Linux with Vite 7 fine. Locally on Mac it correctly builds in 30 seconds (amazing, down from 5-10 minutes). But, it hangs in CI on Linux and a local docker image on Linux. There is no failure message, even with debugging enabled, it truly just hangs halfway through logging about SvelteKit warnings.

Realistically, there’s nothing we or the Vite team can do without a minimal reproduction to diagnose the root cause. SvelteKit 2 has been updated to support Vite 8. But you could also test against the version 3 branch which migrates builds to use the new buildApp hook https://github.com/sveltejs/kit/actions/runs/23069746113/job/67016963623?pr=15497#step:7:91

seing the same issue in github action runners, seems that blacksmith-8vcpu-ubuntu-2404-arm works though. So maybe the default github action runner is not performant enough 🤔

Our team also have this issue with failing builds that hang forever. Happens on Mac OS.

I tried building a minimal reproduction, but I can't reproduce.

I understand why maintainers ask for minimal reproductions, and in many cases that’s the right request. But some classes of bugs only show up in larger, more realistic applications, and attempts to minimize them often remove the very conditions that trigger the issue.

In those cases, it seems reasonable for SvelteKit to have some regression coverage against a few large representative apps, or at least acknowledge “large-app-only” bugs as a real category, instead of treating lack of a minimal repro as a dead end.

What do you think @teemingc ? Are there some way of adding verbose logging, so we can surfarce (or at least get closer) to the cause of the build that hang forever?

We know it's hard to provide a minimum reproducible, and in cases like this where you don't even know where to start a non-minimal reproduction is also fine. But right now we have neither so our hands are tied.

For us there are no specific logs, it just hangs at different times when transforming chunks. AFAIK this also only happens in our SvelteKit project. Other frameworks are not affected so far. I personally can't share the project, but what is very interesting in our case is that as soon as you have a big enough runner it works, but with smaller runners it hangs.

One thing that’s clear is that it never makes it to the client build (or maybe even the analysis phase). Seems like it’s always stuck on the initial SSR build. Have you tried overriding SvelteKit with a SvelteKit 3 installation?

No, it's still in development. But the changes have mostly been very minor (upgrading minimum Node version, removing polyfills, etc.). One of the changes that could help here is that we're no longer running a second Vite build inside the closing hook of the first Vite build. This is one of the hacks most frameworks had to do to get both a server and client build in one build command. With the introduction of the Vite environment API, there's a dedicated buildApp hook to build as many environments as we want. #15497

It was on GitHubs default runner size ubuntu-latest. I think that is both change from x86 to arm64, but also 2vcpu to 8vcpu and 8GB to 24GB ram. I can try to go back to x86 to see if that changes anything, as well as moving to smaller blacksmith runners.
