The final objective of this project is to translate all campaigns available in the Knossos launcher. This is not a realistic objective of course, so here are my current priorities:
- Translate campaigns with voice-acting first.
- Translate campaigns I already played and liked.
You can find the list of the completed translations with download links here: https://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php?topic=97918.0
- Max xstr length: 4096.
- Max objective length: 31.
This part is here to gather all my choices regarding the different translations, so that all my translations have the same rules.
- The main objective is to translate the mods, not to make them better, so no original mod bugfixing if it does not prevent the game completion.
- Ship names are translated when the original name is in English.
- Name of the factions and governments are translated, but not their acronym. So most of the time (especially at the beginning of a campaign), I add the acronym in brackets after the translation of the name. The reason why I keep original acronyms is to avoid needing to change all nameplates of ships.
- Name of ship classes and weapon types are proper nouns (they are considered as brands) so they are invariable in French (no s).
- Name of fighters and bombers follow the rule of planes, so the article before the name will always be masculine. Same rule applies for weapons.
- Name of ships (and classes) bigger than bombers follow the rule of the navy regarding the article: so it can be masculine or feminine depending on the ship name.
- If the name of a ship a preceded by its ship prefix (e.g. GTC), then the article matches in genre with the class ship (GTC being a Cruiser in the example).
- Mods on Knossos have fixed version dependencies to avoid game breaking changes. This is especially true for FSO dependency and mod dependencies containing mission files (which are always overwritten by the translations). The risk is lower for dependencies only containing tables that can be modular, as my translations use distinct modular tables when possible instead of overwritting the originals.
I will put some translations choices here for the cases where no exact translations can be made. This can help in case I find these words elsewhere later.
