NormalMap Editing Guide
Guide for editing NormalMap textures
Extract the NormalMap texture from the object you want to edit and open it in GIMP. Click Colors->Components->Decompose and in the window that pops up, select RGBA.
This creates a new image for editing with four layers, red, green, blue, and alpha. The RGB layers appear identical to each other while the alpha layer tends to be significantly different. You can edit the alpha layer and one of the color layers then copy it to the other two to simplify things.
Once you've finished your edits, select Colors->Components->Compose and in the window that pops up, select RGBA. This will put all the layers back together again.
Optional, for EmotionCreators:
EmotionCreators uses a similar style of NormalMap textures with one difference: the red layer is completely white. To convert a Koikatsu style NormalMap to EmotionCreators style, select the whole red layer, press delete, and paint bucket the layer white. To convert from EmotionCreators to Koikatsu, copy the green or blue layer to the red layer.
