Using the Admin Interface

This document outlines how the admin interface works, generally. It will cover what you should expect to see and how the different aspects are connected.

Home Page (main dashboard)

The page that you likely clicked the link to this document from was the home page for the admin interface. It should look something like the screenshot below.

The large section named models is what you'll likely be interacting with most. These have been split into different sections to make it easier to identify and navigate which items you want to view or create. You can create an instance of any of these using the small + on the right hand side of the row for each model, or from the page listing all the instances of that model type - accessed by clicking the name of the model.

The models that are not under Main models you will likely only want to view to edit, as you can create them from within a film creation form.

It is important to note that you must create bibliography items from their creation form.

Creating Instances

To create a new instance for a model, click on the small + to the right of its name, or click on its name to view a table of all the instances for that model in the database and you should see a button on the right prompting you to add a new instance. Both these methods will open an instance creation form.

The fields should be fairly self explanatory but there is help text provided with some for clarification.

Headings in blue are collapsible and can be clicked to show/hide the section at your convenience.

In the film creation form, you'll see headings for models that were on the home page under Visual Resources (VR) and Print Materials (PM), these can be created here, directly. You will also see headings for Analysis-film-relationships and Teachingresources-film-relationships. These simply mean that you can create new analyses and teaching resources instances through the film and they will be linked, just like the VR and PM ones. The difference in name is due to slightly different relations to the film - VR and PM instances should only be associated specifically with the film, whereas analyses and teaching resources may be associated with a number of different films, as well as each other.

You can select the relevant analyses or teaching resources from the dropdown, or create a new one with the + button next to the dropdown. This should open a new window with the relevant creation form. Upon saving, the original film creation form should automatically select the instance you just created to link to the film. You can view or edit these from their respective list pages.

Bibliographies

Bibliographies are currently available for films (based on the 'Notes on Prints' field), analyses (based on the 'Content' field) and teaching resources (based on the 'Material' field). This means that for each of these models, bibliographies will be automatically generated when an instance is saved, provided the citation is in the necessary field.

You should add bibliography items through the bibliography item creation page and provide a short citation and full citation in the recommended style. To use them, in the mentioned fields for each model above, simply type @ and a list should appear with the bibliography items. This will show all of them, but if you continue typing it will search through the full citation of each bibliography item for relevant matches. Click the one you want from the list and the short citation should be inserted into the editor. Upon saving your film/analysis/teaching resources, you should see that the bibliography has updated to display the full citations (non formatted/styled) of those you've mentioned.

Film list view

The film list view has more information than the others, offering temporary images (used for reference), videos (which will display the first video only) and comments - these are internal comments between researchers and can include images. The images added will display in the same size as they are added. This can be adjusted by double clicking on the image in the editor.

If you would like the list views for any of the models updated to display different fields for that model, please contact Amanda.
