@teerapatrk we have to sync the changes and also keep the old python implementation for the very outdated servers that we have. If we remove support for old pythons some servers won't be able to install anything new and the already installed packages will break from portage.

Right, then I would go with sync from upstream and adjust the supported versions of Python/EAPI for backward compatibility.
With this approach, we will keep minimum number of changes tracking with the future releases.
