Testing energy usage with Xcode 7 and iOS 9 beta...

Notes

The download runs at maximum network speed, so energy usage is quite high initially. Once buffering completes, the energy (and CPU) usage settles down.

Theora is currently built without the armv7/neon assembly optimizations.

VPX is pre-built with the build-ios.sh script.

Run the demo app in Xcode, then click on the Energy Report from the debug/device info sidebar.

iPad Air

  • Ogg 160p runs veerrrry 'Low' :)
  • Ogg 360p runs low-middle of 'Low'
  • Ogg 480p runs middle of 'Low'
  • WebM 360p runs middle of 'Low'
  • WebM 480p runs on the high end of 'Low'
  • WebM 720p runs around the 'Low'/'High' margin
  • WebM 1080p runs on the low end of 'High'

iPod Touch 5th-gen

  • Ogg 160p runs low-middle of 'Low'
  • Ogg 360p runs on the high end of 'Low'
  • Ogg 480p runs around the 'Low'/'High' margin
  • WebM 360p runs around the 'Low'/'High' margin
  • WebM 480p runs at the low end of 'High'
  • WebM 720p too stuttery
