Email has been the first wide spread use case of the Internet. Digital communication using a standarized protocol. Despite it's age, for most people, email is still the primary digital communication tool. Currently, more then 300 biliion mails are sent per day (source).

Despite protocols, such as PGP, encryption of mails has not found wide-spread adoption.
