The extension does not work with update-assistant 0.4.346201 releases a few days ago.

I'm not sure if the problem is the extension or upgrade-assistant.

See this blog post for details:

I reproduced this even with an empty or nonexisting extension, and with an empty project. It seems to be the parsing of the --extension argument itself that causes the exception. I reported it here: dotnet/upgrade-assistant#1297

The issue seem to be fixed by dotnet/upgrade-assistant#1330
Any ETA of when the episerver extension will get this fix?

There is no new release of upgrade-assistant with this fix yet. I do not think the episerver extensions needs any updating. In the meantime, upgrade-assistant 0.4.336902 should work.
