My name is Javier Abreu Barreto (also known as ieris19) and I am a Software Engineer based in Herning, Denmark.
I grew up in Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. As a child I loved tinkering and always wanted to learn the hows and whys. My trajectory with coding started by learning to use Scratch, and followed with working on two robots that competed and ranked 1st and 2nd in the regional LEGO World Robot Olympiad.
I moved to Denmark at age 18 and began studying Software Engineering at VIA University College, where I took a big role in student life from the start, eventually becoming chairperson of the Student Council. In this role I helped mediate the dialog between the school and students, as well as manage the budget and organize events.
I would describe myself as friendly and outgoing, thriving in collaborative environments. I'm always eager to tinker, experiment and find new paths.
The following is a list of badges highlighting my technical knowledge of some fields. I have experience using the following technologies:
| Category | Technologies |
|---|---|
| Programming Languages | Java, C#, Go, SQL, Typescript, Python |
| Frameworks | Spring Boot, .NET, React |
| Productivity | Microsoft Office, Libre Office, Markdown |
| Tools | Git, Bash, Powershell, systemd |
| DevOps & Cloud | Docker, Podman, Google Cloud, CI/CD |
I graduated from VIA University College in 2025. My degree is in Software Technology Engineering.
My education focused on Problem Based Learning, which means for many of the subjects, my evaluation included real software projects, often made in small groups of students. Through these projects I've developed backend systems and dabbled in frontend, database design, testing and project management among many other subjects. Notably, through my electives, I've experienced UX design, Game Development, SAP systems and Machine Learning.
Studying abroad, at an institution that values practical experience so highly, I feel ready to take on the challenges of the industry in my future.
During my internship and subsequent position at this company, I was part of the ERP product team. We maintained a custom ERP solution for insurance brokers, written in C# where I focused on the system's ability to handle EIAC files. As part of this maintenance, I extensively tested the services to ensure high data accuracy and helped refactor old code sections to be more compliant with modern standards such as the SOLID and DRY principles.
During my education, I was an active part of social initiatives and projects.
During my time in High School, where I helped organize extracurricular events. I taught a handful of lessons to several younger classes and tutored numerous acquaintances in diverse subjects.
During my time in VIA University College I quickly rose through the ranks of the student council. I became head of the Events Committee in my second semester and then quickly transitioned into the position of Chairperson for the Student Council before stepping down in 2024. At the student council I handled the organization of events, parties and other social activities, advocated for student's interests and rights and managed several teams of volunteers.
In addition to this, I am a dedicated member of the World Scouting Movement, in connection to which I have volunteered in many ways, from helping at municipal events to cleaning up nature.
