It's been a while, hasn't it?

This is what I've been working on for the past three years, basically every day. A lot has happened in my life since the last release, v1.7.1.0; I finished college, got a "proper job", found myself a lovely boyfriend, and even started living on my own. Working on this update has basically been the only consistent routine I've had for the past few years; and with it's release, it's kind of bittersweet. While this'll most likely not be the final update, I might take a significant break, or might get super motivated to crank out even more content. Can't really tell right now.

But enough about me, what about the update?

Three years is a lot of time, I must have something to show for it, right? I hope so. There's basically not a single line of code in the game that hasn't gone untouched (literally), all in the name of implementing rollback netcode. The previous versions had a bunch of issues surrounding the "host" player, high pings, phantom hits ("I hit him on my screen!"), cheaters, etc. This update should solve basically all of that. You're more likely to feel the update rather than having tons more to do, I'm truly sorry if this doesn't feel like enough content for three years of development...

As for gameplay changes, there's a new Coin Runners gamemode, the Hammer Suit as an additional powerup, two new maps being Beach and Ghost House, water mechanics, Boos, dotted coins, better feature parity with the original game, a replay system, new music for all the custom stages, the list goes on and on. Not to mention the completely overhauled main menu, pause menu, options menu, and HUD UI elements...

Additions:

  • Added unique draw music
  • Added the "no item in reserve" sfx
  • Added enemy kill combo sfx for Starman Players

Adjustments:

  • Ice Flower now only does damage/knockback when a player is thrown
  • Slightly reduced time frozen when hit with an Ice Flower
  • Increased time frozen when picked up while frozen with an Ice Flower
  • Frozen entities now break when hit from below
  • (Once again) improved the stuck-in-block system
  • Players can no longer summon items while dead / respawning
  • Changed Mega Mushroom shrink sfx to more closely match the original game
  • Optimized the fluid physics system. For those with bad PCs, it should help with lag
  • Local Player track icons now are along the bottom, making it easier to tell which one's yours
  • Music now speeds up when one of the last two Players only has 1 life remaining
  • Bobombs no longer detonate when being crushed by a ceiling
  • WIP map changes

Fixes:

  • Fixed crouching requiring more space, making it impossible to uncrouch under Ice's spinner
  • Fixed Ice Flower projectiles being destroyed when passing upwards through a semisolid
  • Fixed the credits using the old outlined font, rather than the new one
  • Fixed the "connecting" screen using the old font
  • Fixed Powerups hanging off ledges above the Player when summoned against a wall
  • Fixed Powerups falling through blocks when bumped from below
  • Fixed clipping into ceilings using the Propeller Mushroom
  • Fixed Koopas/Spinys not properly being bumped from below
  • Fixed Koopas sometimes becoming intangible
  • Fixed Bobombs not interacting properly with Frozen entities
  • Fixed the room list not working when switch to a previously selected region
  • Fixed teleporting out of blocks instead of smoothly moving out of them
  • Fixed graphical tilemap issue on Bricks
  • Fixed Starman Players being unable to jump when immediately below blocks
  • Fixed arrows in the spectator UI not being able to be clicked via mouse
  • Fixed pause menu button using the wrong sprites when hovered/selected
  • Fixed WIP map related bugs
  • Fixed powerups being duplicated when spamming reserve item button
  • Fixed powerups sometimes not spawning properly
  • Fixed graphical artifact with the clouds platforms on Sky

  • Fixed the Mega Mushroom removing your previous powerup when it fails to activate
  • Fixed frozen entities hovering in mid-air when shaking before the ice automatically breaks
  • Fixed a softlock when a player disconnects from the game while loading
  • Fixed a softlock where the spectator loading screen doesn't disappear
