Latin Character Sets (Beta)

Did you know that almost none of the Latin based fonts support the languages of the seventh most populous country in the world?1

While working on Pangea Afrikan I decided to create 4 new contemporary Latin character sets for type designers who care. You can read more about the thoughts behind it on my blog: More Latin!

Please note that only characters for language support are included; no figures, punctuation etc. Additional currency symbols are however contained to make the font fully usable in countries whose languages they support.2

The character sets build on each other. For Latin M e.g. Latin S also needs to be supported.

Latin S

There’s nothing extended about what’s most often referred to as Latin Extended. Latin S is a new approach to a handy base character set that doesn’t take much more effort, but has a rather big impact on language support.

Here’s a closer look at it: Designing Latin S

Compared to the common practice, it

  • requires ≈80 additional glyphs (most of which are composites of existing glyphs though, such as Ẽǒʼ).
  • supports about 100 extra languages3, such as Azerbaijani (37M speakers), Ga (8.5M), Paraguayan Guaraní (6.5M), Hausa (40M), Igbo (27M), Lingála (15M), Úmbúndú (9.5M), Yorùbá (40M) …
  • serves about 200,000,000 additional speakers

Btw, it includes the Pan-Nigerian alphabet and therefore does support the languages of the seventh most populous country in the world! 💯

Notes

Glyphs/Design

/Eng (Ŋ)

For the uppercase Eng I suggest the enlarged lowercase n-form which is preferred in African languages. I added a localized form for the Sami languages in Latin L.

/L_periodcentered.loclCAT/l\_periodcentered.loclCAT

I recommend including these glyphs instead of the encoded characters /Ldot/ldot (0x013F, 0x0140).

OpenType features

ccmp

The best practice for the Dutch /j with acute (that doesn’t have a Unicode) is to use the combining acute U+0301. But we have to get rid of the dot on the /j first, so ccmp should include somthing like this:

sub j' acutecomb by jdotless;
locl

Use something like this in your locl feature:

script latn;

language MOL;
sub Scedilla by Scommaaccent;
sub scedilla by scommaaccent;
sub Tcedilla by Tcommaaccent;
sub tcedilla by tcommaaccent;

language ROM;
sub Scedilla by Scommaaccent;
sub scedilla by scommaaccent;
sub Tcedilla by Tcommaaccent;
sub tcedilla by tcommaaccent;

language CAT;
sub l' periodcentered' l by l_periodcentered.loclCAT;
sub L' periodcentered' L by L_periodcentered.loclCAT;
mark

For a wider language support (including the Dutch /j with acute), a proper mark feature is strongly recommended.

Latin M

Latin M is mainly about stacking accents for Vietnamese (76M speakers). And while you’re at it, you might want to add support for Pinyin and the romanization of Semitic languages and Sanskrit.

Requires 144 additional glyphs (≈90% composites of existing glyphs)

Notes

Glyphs/Design

/Fhook/florin (Ƒƒ)

In African languages, lowercase f with hook is an actual letter, even if it shares the codepoint with the Florin currency.

/Eng.loclNSM

If your default Eng has the enlarged lowercase n-form (see Latin S), this one should be the uppercase N-form for Northern Sami and Skolt Sami.

/Lcommaaccent.loclMAH/Ncommaaccent.loclMAH /lcommaaccent.loclMAH/ncommaaccent.loclMAH

In Marshallese, centered cedillas are preferred over comma accents.

/Aogonek.loclNAV/Eogonek.loclNAV/aogonek.loclNAV/eogonek.loclNAV

In Navajo, ogoneks should be centered below the base letters.

/Alpha-latin/Beta-latin/Chi-latin/Omega-latin (ⱭꞴꞳꞶ)

The design of these Latin uppercase letters is different from their Greek sisters.

/beta/epsilon/theta/lambda/omega (βεθλω)

These Greek letters are sometimes being used in Latin context and therefore should be included.

/jcaron.case/glottalstopreversed.case

I included these since in unicode there are no uppercase variants of /jcaron/glottalstopreversed (ǰʕ).

OpenType features

case

If you include /jcaron.case/glottalstopreversed.case glyphs, case should contain:

sub jcaron by jcaron.case;
sub glottalstopreversed by glottalstopreversed.case;
locl

Use something like this in your locl feature:

language NSM;
sub Eng by Eng.loclNSM;
language SKS;
sub Eng by Eng.loclNSM;

language MAH;
sub Lcommaaccent by Lcommaaccent.loclMAH;
sub Ncommaaccent by Ncommaaccent.loclMAH;
sub lcommaaccent by lcommaaccent.loclMAH;
sub ncommaaccent by ncommaaccent.loclMAH;

language NAV;
sub Aogonek by Aogonek.loclNAV;
sub Eogonek by Eogonek.loclNAV;
sub aogonek by aogonek.loclNAV;
sub eogonek by eogonek.loclNAV;
mark

For full language support, a proper mark feature is required.

Latin XL

Latin XL fills up Adobe Latin 5, including characters for IPA and APA. I don’t know if this makes sense.

Installation

FontLab

The encoding files go into the app’s Encoding folder.

Glyphs

Put the CustomFilters file in the same place as your Glyphs file and the character sets will show up as filters once you open it.

RoboFont

You can import the FontSets in your UFO file.

CJ Dunn also prepared handy formulas for the Glyph Construction extension.

Etc

For everything else there are several lists with names and unicodes.

Comments

These character sets were thoroughly compiled, yet they come without any warranty.

Please contribute to Hyperglot, give feedback, and join the discussion to further improve them!
