I stopped reading for now until the 'layout' section.

I want to add an additional section "Next steps" that will guide the likely readers of this document (implementers, and theme builders), to the relevant documentation for them to continue. For now I put this up for review since the document in its current form could be merged and already be useful for its readers.

Additional updates will be picked up in new tickets.
