Hi there, I'm Maria πŸ™‹β€β™€οΈπŸ‘‹

  • πŸ˜„ Pronouns: she/her
  • 🌱 After completing the Makers Academy Bootcamp, I am seeking opportunities as a junior software developer.

I became curious about software development in 2001 when I studied at a Bootcamp in Spain (Fycsa, an Alcatel subsidiary), based on C, HTML, SQL, Javascript, and a bit of Java, which launched my career in Madrid. As I arrived in the UK, I realised my former training had already become obsolete, so after a stint in retail, I decided to begin my career again in software development because I liked the feeling of solving a "puzzle" every day.

I have a wide range of transferrable skills that I can apply and continue developing for any future project, based on my previous work experience in the airline industry, management, and retail.

Projects

Project Description Technologies
Hang-Git My final project at Makers. Hang-Git is a game designed to help students learn Git commands by playing Hangman. React, MondoDb, CircleCI, Heroku, React testing
Bank Tech Test A simple banking program I made in order to practice OOP, TDD, and programming fluency. Javascript, Jasmine
FizzBuzz in Python The classic TDD exercise with Python and Pytest Python

Skills

Problem Solving

When something does not work the way it should be, my focus goes immediately to identify what's wrong and find the fix: In my previous position with IATA I was sent to Israel to check the status of their account (the person they hired simply walked away) and resolved the differences in the system there, as well as performing the tasks to correct the problems.

In my experience with Makers, I have faced new challenges not just with coding, but also in setting up projects, researching libraries to use, or patches needed for the different versions of systems, or connecting to different platforms so that I could carry through to development.

Love Learning

Programming appeals to me because I like learning new things, being challenged, and trying to understand how things work and what they can do. Through my training during these times, I learned to be adaptable to all circumstances, to work independently, and to use my skills to find solutions and investigate on my own.

Delivery

I am accountable for every task I undertake, and I do my best at it. I had very strict deadlines for payments at IATA, which left very little room for error, and I was responsible for ensuring that all payments were made on time.

Also during the process of onboarding the new tool that was being developed we had to work with tight deadlines of delivery for results' calculations, as there was a combined effort between sites as separated as Montreal, Singapore, and Geneva, so to ensure that any of the sites will not miss a deadline due to interdependencies, we had to make sure that each of the requirements was sent on time.

Team-player

Having worked in different countries with people from very diverse backgrounds, I have seen how communication and collaboration ensure successful results: on the deployment of the worldwide tool in IATA we had teams collaborating in five countries with very different timezones, so communication and being reliable on deliverables was essential.

  • IATA (2006 to 2015) - Remittance & Settlement Management, from Assistant Manager in Madrid to Manager in Stockholm, Senior Manager in the Europe Hub and finally Regional Manager in the Middle East & Africa: Developed a MSAccess database to manage collections and settlements between Travel Agencies and Airlines, that was later on the base for the tool used in all the company.
  • AMADEUS (2002 to 2006) - Markets Department Support: Maintenance and update of a Business Sales segmentation tool in MSAccess that run automatic processes for information management.

Education

Makers (March 2021 - July 2021)

OOP, TDD, MVC, Ruby, Rails, Javascript, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, MongoDb, Rspec, Jasmine,HTML, CSS.

Fycsa (2001)
