This is a bit of an experiment; I decided to dick around with Claude Code, and asked him to implement an automated testing harness, which he did, including an interactive mode which he can use as a REPL to test his own work.
Along the way, there were several other changes, including improvements to the makefile, and also added command line options to supply an alternative config file (which he loves to rewrite for testing).
A large part of this patch is notes that Claude wrote to itself to help is understand/remember the project overview/structure.
