New month, new mapping contest! Vote on last month's submissions and compete to become the next Elite Mapper! | ||
 | ||
The Monthly Beatmapping Contest (*MBC*) is back after a multi-year hiatus. Check out [last month's contest announcement](https://osu.ppy.sh/home/news/2020-01-05-monthly-beatmapping-contests-return) if you need to catch up. | ||
January's contest received a *massive* turnout of over 100 valid submissions! A group of experienced beatmappers narrowed them down to the top 10% — the best 11 entries — so we encourage you to download those and vote for your **3 favourites**. | ||
**[Vote for last month's contest here!](https://osu.ppy.sh/community/contests/84)** Results will be published in 2 weeks. | ||
Now that housekeeping is out of the way, let's talk about this month's contest! | ||
## Schedule | ||
As per usual, the timeline for this month's contest is as follows: | ||
- **Beatmapping (3 weeks):** Contest is announced and beatmappers create their entries. | ||
- **Screening (1 week):** Entries are evaluated by experienced beatmappers. | ||
- **Voting (2 weeks):** Top entries from screening are published for the osu! community to vote on. This overlaps with the next month's beatmapping portion. | ||
- **Rewards:** Winners are announced and prizes are redeemed, including profile badges, osu!supporter, and the *Elite Mapper* user title! | ||
If you're curious about the details behind any of these, dive into the [Monthly Beatmapping Contest wiki article](/wiki/Contests/Monthly_Beatmapping_Contest). It answers every question you could ask. Probably. | ||
## Beatmapping | ||
### <a id="limitation"></a>Limitation | ||
Each month's contest has its own mapping limitation that participants must design their maps around. For example, last month's limitation was "straight slider shapes only", so sliders in all beatmap submissions were... straight lines. Pretty simple, right? | ||
This month's limitation: **star rating cannot exceed 4.00** | ||
Just to be clear, we're not requiring you to create a `Hard` difficulty. We actually recommend an `Insane` or `Expert` instead! | ||
Your submission should complement the intensity of the song, only without surpassing 4.00 stars. Given the song choices available in this contest, you'll likely need to handle difficulty in a way that isn't well reflected in star rating. Good luck! | ||
### <a id="songs"></a>Songs | ||
Each contest provides beatmappers a choice between 5 songs from one of osu!'s Featured Artists. | ||
This month's artist is **Voicians**, and the following songs are viable for contest submissions: | ||

All beatmap templates above include shortened versions of songs — mappers are free to map whichever one they prefer! | ||
## Rules | ||
So how do you participate? Submissions must... | ||
- **follow the month's [beatmapping limitation](#limitation): *star rating cannot exceed 4.00*** | ||
- **be in `.osz` format.** This allows your entry to use custom hitsound files and a background of your choice, however storyboarded visuals will be removed from all submissions. | ||
- **be a single difficulty for one of the month's [selected songs](#songs).** | ||
- **be in the osu! game mode.** Other game modes will be considered after trialing this contest with osu! only. | ||
- **not be uploaded to the osu! website through the Beatmap Submission System (*BSS*).** All contest submissions are anonymous during the screening/voting phases to avoid bias. **DO NOT SHARE YOUR ENTRY!** | ||
- **be solely created by you.** Collaborations are not allowed. | ||
- **abide by the [ranking criteria](/wiki/Ranking_Criteria).** While we can be forgiving for mistakes, submissions that could not be ranked without major changes will be discarded. | ||
Any entries breaking these rules will not be viable for the contest. | ||
--- | ||
And... that's about it! If you're curious what shiny prizes you could get for winning or how winners are selected, be sure to read the [Monthly Beatmapping Contest wiki article](/wiki/Contests/Monthly_Beatmapping_Contest). There's a few too many details to squish into a post like this! | ||
Head over to the [contest listing](https://osu.ppy.sh/community/contests/89) when you're ready to submit your entry. You have **3 weeks** until submissions close (2020-02-24), so launch the editor and get started as soon as you can. | ||
Oh, and don't forget to vote for the best 3 entries from last month's contest [here](https://osu.ppy.sh/community/contests/84)! | ||
Best of luck and have fun mapping! | ||

# Monthly Beatmapping Contest | ||
As implied by its name, the **Monthly Beatmapping Contest** (***MBC***) is a [contest](/wiki/Contests) that runs monthly and allows users to compete with their [beatmapping](/wiki/Beatmapping) capabilities. | ||
The MBC was originally managed on a nearly monthly basis between 2013 and 2015 and was followed by hiatus until 2020. The first 12 iterations of the MBC can be found on the [Contests article](/wiki/Contests#monthly-beatmapping-contest). The results for the 13th iteration can be found on its [news post](https://osu.ppy.sh/home/news/2017-04-02-monthly-beatmapping-contest-13-results). | ||
Since 2020, the MBC has adopted a new schedule, ruleset, voting procedure, and reward scheme. The rest of this article details the current format for Monthly Beatmapping Contests. | ||
## Schedule | ||
The timeline for each month's contest is as follows: | ||
- **Beatmapping (3 weeks):** Contest is announced at the start of the month and beatmappers create their entries. | ||
- **Screening (1 week):** Entries are evaluated by experienced beatmappers. | ||
- **Voting (2 weeks):** Top entries from screening are published for the osu! community to vote on. | ||
- **Rewards:** Winners are announced and prizes are redeemed. | ||
The voting portion of each contest overlaps with the next month's contest's beatmapping portion. | ||
## Ruleset | ||
Submissions for the MBC must abide by the following rules: | ||
- **Submissions must follow the month's beatmapping limitation.** The limitation differs month by month and is detailed on each contest's announcement post. | ||
- **Submissions must be a single difficulty from one of the month's selected songs.** Selected songs differ month by month and are included in each contest's announcement post. | ||
- **Submissions must be in `.osz` format.** Storyboarded content will not be considered. | ||
- **Submissions must be in the osu! game mode.** Other game modes will be considered after trialing this contest with osu! only. | ||
- **Submissions must *not* be uploaded to the osu! website through the Beatmap Submission System (*BSS*).** Creators of each entry are anonymous during the screening and voting processes. | ||
- **Submissions must abide by the [ranking criteria](/wiki/Ranking_Criteria).** | ||
One or more rules may be added or dropped depending on the month's specifications. Any exceptions will be clearly explained in the contest's announcement post. | ||
## Results | ||
Results for the MBC are first narrowed down to the most competitive entries, then published for community vote. Creators of all entries are anonymous in the screening and voting stages. | ||
### Screening | ||
A group of at least 10 experienced beatmappers (*screening crew*) are tasked with reviewing all entries and providing their top picks in order of preference. Entries that receive the most praise from the screening crew will move on to the voting stage. | ||
The amount of beatmaps that advance to the voting stage varies depending on the amount of highly competitive submissions the contest receives and will usually range between 5 and 10 finalists. | ||
### Voting | ||
Voting takes place on the respective contest's [Community Contests page](https://osu.ppy.sh/community/contests). Users are encouraged to vote for their favourite entries and to prioritize those that effectively work with the month's beatmapping limitation. | ||
### Previous contests | ||
Information and results for all iterations of the MBC since its relaunch in 2020 can be found below. | ||

## Rewards | ||
The Monthly Beatmapping Contest rewards users with points for different types of results (*MBC points*): | ||
- **Community vote winner:** 2 points | ||
- **Community vote runner-up:** 1 point | ||
- **Screening crew's #1 pick:** 1 point | ||
MBC points reward users at certain thresholds: | ||
- **Profile badges** are attainable at 3, 6, and 10 points each. The badges are tiered, meaning each new badge will replace the previous one (and they get progressively shinier!). | ||
- ***Elite Mapper* forum title** is attainable at 10 points. | ||
- One month of **osu!supporter** is rewarded for each point a user earns. This can be used by the winner or gifted to someone else. | ||
Participants who are in the [Mappers' Guild](https://mappersguild.com/) will receive small earnings within the guild for submitting a valid entry (5), screening (1), and voting (1). These values are unrelated to MBC points. | ||
### Points | ||
After the conclusion of the first contest, each user's MBC points will be listed in this section. | ||
