# Beat

A **beat** is a period of time that songs can be divided into based on their [BPM](/wiki/Beatmapping/Beats_per_minute). A correctly timed [beatmap](/wiki/Beatmaps) will have each beat correspond to the song's rhythm, and a whole beat should fall between two white lines on the [timeline](/wiki/Beatmap_Editor/Timelines).

# Authentic beatmap

An **authentic [beatmap](/wiki/Beatmaps)** is one that emulates a stage from the [iNiS games](/wiki/iNiS_games). The term originates from a time where [mapping](/wiki/Beatmapping) was heavily inspired by iNiS. Today, the term "authentic" has little meaning, as generations of mappers have been inspired by each other instead of the original games.

# Background

*For regulations surrounding backgrounds, see: [Ranking Criteria](/wiki/Ranking_Criteria)*

**Background** (***BG***) images and videos can be added to [beatmaps](/wiki/Beatmaps). When written only as "background" or "bg", it usually refers to the background image.

Backgrounds are displayed on beatmap cards, on the [song selection screen](/wiki/Interface#song-selection-screen), and during gameplay.

# Beatmap ID

*See also: [Beatmapset ID](/wiki/Beatmaps/Beatmapset_ID)*

A **beatmap ID** is a unique incrementing number given to all [submitted](/wiki/Submission) [beatmaps](/wiki/Beatmaps). They are used to identify beatmaps in the game client, website, and [API](/wiki/osu!api).

The common spelling of "BeatmapID" for this value comes from the key in the [`.osu` file](/wiki/osu!_File_Formats/Osu_(file_format)) that describes a beatmap. Unsubmitted beatmaps have a value of `0` for that key.

Beatmap IDs refer to beatmaps in various URLs:

# Beatmapset ID

A **beatmapset ID** is a unique incrementing number given to all [submitted](/wiki/Submission) [beatmapsets](/wiki/Beatmaps/Beatmapsets). They are used to identify beatmapsets in the game client, website, and [API](/wiki/osu!api). A single beatmapset ID is shared between all of the [beatmaps](/wiki/Beatmaps) in a set.

The common spelling of "BeatmapSetID" for this value comes from the key in the [`.osu` file](/wiki/osu!_File_Formats/Osu_(file_format)) that describes a beatmap. Unsubmitted beatmapsets have a value of `-1` for that key.

# Break

**Breaks** are sections of a [beatmap](/wiki/Beatmaps) which have no [hit objects](/wiki/Hit_object). During this time, the drain of the health bar is temporarily halted. Breaks usually allow the player to rest their arm for a short while and reposition their input device.

Depending on the enabled settings, letterboxes may appear when a break is initiated. In addition to this, a passing or failing graphic and sound may appear to indicate if a player is doing well or not. This will only appear if there is enough time for the graphic to show.

# Bit rate

*For regulations surrounding bit rate, see: [Ranking criteria](/wiki/Ranking_Criteria)*\
*For help re-encoding audio to a different bit rate, see: [Audio editing guide](/wiki/Guides/Audio_Editing).*

**Bit rate** is a measurement of data throughput for a media file in units of bits over time. In osu!, this is relevant when talking about the quality of audio files: higher quality audio typically requires a higher bit rate, while lower quality audio can use a lower bit rate.

Bit rates of audio files typically range from 96kbps (kilobits per second) to 320kbps. The [ranking criteria](/wiki/Ranking_Criteria) require that song audio is in the 128–192kbps range, and [AiMod](/wiki/Beatmap_Editor/AiMod) will warn if this is not the case.
