Network structure

Partnerships in both FP7 and H2020 have a dual structure. They display a large giant component and a large number of disconnected “islands”. Islands represent, of course, projects participated by consortia in which none of the partners participated in any other projects.

The main feature of the giant component itself is, in both networks, a relatively numerous k-core of highly connected organisations that we call the Death Star. In the decomposition of the giant component into k-cores, the Death Star corresponds to the maximum value of k found by the algorithm.

H2020 network structure

As of mid-April 2016, H2020 consisted of 7,574 projects with 12,326 participants. 1246 of the latter had no partnership at all: they were sole recipients of H2020 grants. We imagine this might be through SME Instrument and possibly other programmes that, like it, support individual legal entities rather than consortia. A further 8,802 had no stable partners. Precisely, they have no other organisation they have partnered with more than once.

network type what being connected means orgs edges
partnership network one edge = co-participation in ONE project 12,326 196,436
stacked partnerships one edge = co participation in ONE OR MORE projects 12,326 170,120
stable partnerships one edge = co-participation in TWO OR MORE projects 11,080 16,289
giant component one edge = co-participation in TWO OR MORE projects 2,069 15,780
Death Star (k = 132) one edge = co-participation in TWO OR MORE projects 78 2778

FP7 network structure

As of mid-April 2009, FP7 consisted of 25,459 projects with 31,086 participants. 473 of the latter had no partnership at all: they were sole recipients of FP7 grants. We imagine this might be through programmes that, supported individual legal entities rather than consortia. A further 21,681 had no stable partners: all their partnership that far had been one-offs.

network type what being connected means orgs edges
partnership network one edge = co-participation in ONE project 31,085 886,475
stacked partnerships one edge = co participation in ONE OR MORE projects 31,085 671,917
stable partnerships one edge = co-participation in TWO OR MORE projects 31,085 97,820
giant component one edge = co-participation in TWO OR MORE projects 8,738 98,524
Death Star (k = 429) one edge = co-participation in TWO OR MORE projects 44 908

8,802 organisations have no stable partnership. Precisely, they have no other organisation they have partnered with more than once.
