Originally I'd set this up to use ruff via `hatch fmt` but it's awkward to integrate with pre-commit and ensure that everything uses a consistent config. Eventually, we should be able to simplify that ruff config a bit!

As stated in #901, the plan is to release 1.0 soon-ish after Python 3.14 is released by which time Python 3.9 will be EOL
