Boston icons can be used on different desktop environments besides GNOME?

Boston icon theme was made under FreeDesktop standard. So, every desktop that respects this can use it. You can see a complete compatible list here.

Anyway, it's convenient to remember Boston icons are made for GNOME, its shell, users and ecosystem as reference.

Why don't contain the application icons released years ago?

Boston was completely revamped since version 0.2. Design guidelines changed, as well as sizes and the philosophy to offer the theme. So, there is no sense to mix old icons with the new ones.

Why not offer an extensive collection of application icons?

This is a small project with a specific proposal. According to production priorities, system icons are the most important, as well as outdated or very bad looking pieces. In addition, maintaining the authentic app icons allows to keep the creators' original idea/design, trying to respect opinions expressed by the manifesto "Please don't theme our apps". Only the missing symbolics will be able to be created according to a metaphor.

By other hand, exists some troubles with Flatpak apps, which makes it difficult to fully implement the theme. Flatpak is an interesting way to share apps, and some distros use it as important software manager for the OS (like Fedora or GNOME project in itself). So, Flatpak limitations for user and interface customization should be considered as external "problems", with pros and cons about the homogeneus look over other icon themes.

Are there differences between the versions of Pling / OpenDesktop and GitHub repositories?

Yes. Downloads from Pling / OpenDesktop are prepared for final use and contain some extra addings. GitHub is used only as repository and is updated at same time as official releases. The reasons for this decision are two points:

  1. Only one branch, version and release date for everybody. Is better for a unified experience and maintenance. Also is a kind of respect for all people who have been contributed economically to the project.
  2. Pling / OpenDesktop downloads are free but can contribute to a small part of the economic incomes. You can read more about it here.

Also, Pling / OpenDesktop packages have digital signatures to increase the security and the authenticity of final products.

Third party packages, forks and other projects has official support?

No. The author isn't responsible for the quality of other projects or media distribution unrelated with him.
