I don't have any feedback on the code, but I do know that I'm getting a lot of errors on close in the current state.

X connection to :0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown).

... or sometimes ...

XIO:  fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0"
      after 87 requests (77 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
