Creating A New Language File
In order to create a new language translation:
-
Pick the correct language and country codes from below to make up a language tag
- Pick the correct language code from the ISO639-1 list found here: ISO 639-1
- Pick the correct country code from the ISO3166-1 list found here: ISO 3166-1
For example:
- "en-GB" : English (United Kingdom)
- "fr-FR" : Français (France)
- "de-DE" : Deutsche (Deutschland)
-
Take a copy of the EN-GB.INI and EN-GB-TOOL.INI files (or any other language files that may exist) and rename it to suit your language and country as above. The file encoding format must be set as UTF-8.
-
Edit these new files, putting in all the language specific strings you can, making sure of any spellings and grammar as required. Any strings with numbers in curly brackets {0}, {1} must be kept, and put in the correct language specific position. NOTE: Only change the values in quotes - Do not change any other value
-
If you want a pretty flag icon for your new language, the ones I am using are from http://www.icondrawer.com/img/free_icons/Flags.zip In the folder ".\flags\flags_iso\16", find your flag using the ISO3166-1 country code above. The ZIP file attached as part of this project is a copy of the downloaded file with all non-required icons removed.
-
Save the translated INI files and flag icon into the i18n folder, making sure that the file names match.
-
Test. Test a lot. (see below)
-
Send the translated INI files to me for inclusion into the main repository (optional, but I would really appreciate it).
-
Thank you for helping to translate my tool.
To make sure your translated language file is working as it should, the following list may help:
-
The file encoding format must be set to UTF-8.
-
Every entry must be surrounded by single-quotes. The exception to this rule is the APPL entry for each check.
-
Single-quotes must not be used anywhere within the text. Use double-quotes.
-
The APPL entry is a lookup value and must match one of the three letter entries in the [applyto] section. It must not have quotes around it.
-
The main file name must be 9 characters long (including the extension): ??-??.ini The tool file name must be 14 characters long (including the extension): ??-??-tool.ini
-
You don't need to translate everything. Anything not translated will use the English (United Kingdom) entry.
