Homegrown musician **Sparxe** makes their way from osu!'s leaderboards to osu!'s Featured Artist listing!

![](https://assets.ppy.sh/artists/398/header.jpg)

**Sparxe**'s music has been at the forefront of the competitive side of osu!taiko for years. From [the former highest osu!taiko pp score](https://osu.ppy.sh/scores/taiko/173764399) to 17 [osu! originals](/wiki/osu!_originals) (most of which were for various tournaments), practically everyone invested in osu!taiko knows **Sparxe**.

**6** of those tunes are at your fingertips (assuming you touch your screen after heading to [**Sparxe**'s Featured Artist listing](https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmaps/artists/398)).

**Sparxe** specialises in an interpretive mix of ZUN's *Touhou* themes and Camellia's... Camellia-ness. Hear what that sounds like for yourself through this video of *Zinnober* and the rest of these previews:

title: "5 Digit World Cup 2024: Registrations Now Open!"
date: 2024-01-23 12:00:00 +0000
---

Calling all 5 digit osu! players! After a long wait, the 5 Digit World Cup is back — and it's better than ever.

![](/wiki/shared/news/2024-01-23-5-digit-world-cup-2024-registrations-now-open/5wc2024-banner.png)

The 5 Digit World Cup is an annual world-cup-style community tournament for any osu! player with a 5 digit rank. Each year, team organisers from around the world seek out the best 5 digits to represent their country in hopes of winning the title of 5WC champion. In a few weeks, 32 qualifying countries will battle it out across 6 weeks of intense bracket stage competition — everyone is invited to participate and spectate each weekend!

[Last year](https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/topics/1699537?n=1), we received a staggering 2,740 registrations from 69 different countries. Against all odds, Team France (#4) managed to narrowly claim **two** back-to-back Grand Finals tiebreaker victories against Team Russia (#2) in an exhausting 4-hour match. This came after defeating an incredibly strong Team Netherlands (#1) in the prior losers bracket Grand Finals match, sending them home with third place.

## Changes from 2023

[5WC 2023](https://osu.ppy.sh/community/forums/topics/1699537?n=1) featured lots of improvements from previous iterations, but every rose has its thorns. For everyone returning from last year's tournament, take a moment to review the following changes made in order to reduce lingering points of discomfort:

- 5WC 2024 now uses the standard [BWS](/wiki/Tournaments/Badge-weighted_seeding) formula and does not count tournament badges earned before Jan 1, 2021.
- The Qualifier procedure has changed: we now feature a pool with 14 maps at a harder difficulty target than before (now 6.5 stars).
- The Qualifier mappool will not feature a freemod map.
- This year's Grand Finals mappool is slightly more challenging at 7.0 stars.
- There is an all-new web-based [registration process](#registrations)!

## Registrations

Players and organisers will need to log in **[here](https://5wc.stagec.xyz/)** to register or manage their teams. Organisers have a new, private web interface they can use to manage their teams. Players who are selected will not know until told directly by their organiser.

Additionally, prospective players must:

- Not be restricted or hold an active tournament ban by the end of registrations.
- Must not violate the 5WC 2024 community rules in a way which warrants disqualification.
- Be within the rank range of #10,000–99,999 after the [BWS formula](/wiki/Tournaments/Badge-weighted_seeding) is applied with badges earned on or after 1 January 2021.
- Join our [Discord server](https://discord.gg/WxX2UkdSMq).

### Tryouts

Most countries require their players to pass tryouts in order to be considered for the team. To check who your country's tryout organiser is, check out [this spreadsheet](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1AnmOB2qatI0wFF_yj0NLoAevHSRUI2AEA0Q-Csn268Y/edit#gid=0).

You'll need to get in touch with the tryouts community for your country in order to participate. If you don't see your country on this list, join our [Discord server](https://discord.gg/WxX2UkdSMq) and reach out to the admin team by opening a ticket in our `#tickets` channel, we'll be happy to help.

title: "osu!mania 7K World Cup 2024: Round of 24 Recap"
date: 2024-01-26 15:00:00 +0000
---

The osu!mania 7K World Cup begins! Stay updated as participants start revving up their engines to maintain their momentum for the remainder of the tournament.

![](/wiki/Tournaments/MWC/2024_7K/img/mwc7k2024-banner.jpg)

Continuing on from the [osu! World Cup recaps](https://osu.ppy.sh/home/news/2023-11-28-osu-world-cup-2023-finals-recap), you can once more expect a summary of the latest and greatest of MWC (7K)! This year, **for the first time ever**, the tournament kicked off with a Round of 24! Due to increased interest from various countries that have both applied and qualified, we have been blessed with an extra round and exciting matches straight away!

Before getting into the highlight matches, let's quickly reflect (or familiarise) ourselves with the Round of 24 mappool.

## Mappool showcase

[**Download the pool here! (50 MB)**](https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmaps/packs/P233)

<div align="center" class="osu-md__paragraph">
<iframe width="95%" style="aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;" src="https://player.twitch.tv/?video=2032775000&parent=osu.ppy.sh&autoplay=false&t=0h36m41s" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" scrolling="no"></iframe>
</div>

With a new tournament comes a suite of new custom beatmaps for everyone to enjoy! This time around, the mapping team is making active efforts to ensure some of these picks are available to be ranked after the tournament ends. Stay tuned for all [osu! originals](/wiki/osu!_originals) that are up to come — soon right in your beatmap collection!

## Match highlights

We may just be getting started, but we already had a few matches that are worth highlighting take place.

### ::{ flag=BR }:: Brazil vs. ::{ flag=PT }:: Portugal

<div align="center" class="osu-md__paragraph">
<iframe width="95%" style="aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;" src="https://player.twitch.tv/?video=2038389122&parent=osu.ppy.sh&autoplay=false" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" scrolling="no"></iframe>
</div>

Brazil vs. Portugal was a match that went as one would have expected on paper, but one moment shone through in particular.

Almost every single 7K tournament player in recent years has that one annoying skill set to deal with. Usually, early-stage LN coordination charts (the "Oh boy, 2* in the pool!" trap) faces the fate of being the most banned chart in a mappool. In this match, however, the stars aligned in such a way that LN coordination was left as an open option.

Portugal was down 4–0 coming into their third pick of the match, with only a limited amount of options left to turn it around. ::{ flag=PT }:: [Rodrig0v](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/138866), their team captain, made the decision to exhaust the LN pool and selected the notoriously tricky LN1 chart [Mitsukiyo - Theme_37](https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/2119592#mania/4452483). Clocking in at 69 BPM, and with only 313 long notes, absolutely no one could afford any misses.

The chart started and everyone's combos and accuracies started dropping like flies, except for one person holding on (literally!). It was Rodrig0v who was doing more than enough to give Portugal that sweet, sweet advantage. While Brazil will eventually have an S-rank score coming from ::{ flag=BR }:: [LothusFangirl](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/4685756), it wasn't enough to cover for the heroics made by Portugal's captain.

The match eventually ended in Brazil's favour 5–1, but this moment will always be in our hearts.

### ::{ flag=NL }:: Netherlands vs. ::{ flag=TW }:: Taiwan

<div align="center" class="osu-md__paragraph">
<iframe width="95%" style="aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;" src="https://player.twitch.tv/?video=2039351530&parent=osu.ppy.sh&autoplay=false" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" scrolling="no"></iframe>
</div>

The Netherlands vs. Taiwan match was one of the two closest matches we've seen this round! Suffice to say, with their seeds being #16 and #17 respectively, we knew we were in for a close match — but not this close!

Due to a slight mishap, this match was played without the teams' protects. Despite that, neither one of the teams backed down and readjusted their strategies despite their comfort picks potentially being banned! The match ended up evolving into a constant back and forth, highlighted by ::{ flag=NL }:: [Tyronix](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/11290311)'s overall performance and nerves of steel, ::{ flag=NL }:: [Freek](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/9630674)'s amazing LN scores, and Taiwan's extraordinary consistency all throughout the match!

But the final star of the show was the tiebreaker, [Massive New Krew - Majestic 12](https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/2119554#mania/4452392). While both teams were at their wits' ends, this didn't stop them from pushing themselves to the limit with quite a tight lead all things considered. Unfortunately for the Netherlands, Taiwan's consistency and control by the hands of ::{ flag=TW }:: [hero_jeff](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/3375226) and ::{ flag=TW }:: [[EGEJ]Egg_Tart](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/9666710) ended up giving them the edge.

Congratulations to both teams, as nobody could've predicted who would be taking the lead in such a close match!

### ::{ flag=RU }:: Russian Federation vs. ::{ flag=DK }:: Denmark

<div align="center" class="osu-md__paragraph">
<iframe width="95%" style="aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;" src="https://player.twitch.tv/?video=2039423606&parent=osu.ppy.sh&autoplay=false" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" scrolling="no"></iframe>
</div>

Russia went into this match as a crowd favourite, given their roster and their qualifier performance. Meanwhile, Denmark carried some very respectable players like ::{ flag=DK }:: [Fritte](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/5001658) and ::{ flag=DK }:: [Jole](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/2883132), but not without amazing teammates to keep up the pace!

While the seeding implied that this would be a very one-sided match, it was anything but. Both teams won their first picks, and the next two picks were a trade of break points. Russia had some unfortunate mishaps on [litmus\* - Flashdance](https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/2119632#mania/4452673), while Denmark gave away their LN2 pick, [DJ Totoriott - Chronoxia](https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/2119552#mania/4452390), with ::{ flag=RU }:: [Meiju's](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/5527957) score making all the difference tying up the score and not letting Denmark get away with a lead.

Russia had an obvious getaway pick with [shadow\_bling - Crush Alcohol](https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/2062870#mania/4452380) — but misses from both sides kept this close until the Russians barely pulled away in the end of the chart. Denmark went for [seatrus - Raindrop](https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/2119535#mania/4452365) as a counter, with Jole coming into this chart as one of the formidable chordstream players in this round. They definitely showed up with a 5x 200 score on *Raindrop*, tying up the scoreline yet again.

Both teams were put in a very difficult position given the remaining charts in the pool, ending up in a tiebreaker scenario on [Massive New Krew - Majestic 12](https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/2119554#mania/4452392), that resulted in the Russians winning the match 5–4.

### ::{ flag=GB }:: United Kingdom vs. ::{ flag=DE }:: Germany

<div align="center" class="osu-md__paragraph">
<iframe width="95%" style="aspect-ratio: 16 / 9;" src="https://player.twitch.tv/?video=2039449910&parent=osu.ppy.sh&autoplay=false" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="true" scrolling="no"></iframe>
</div>

The United Kingdom vs. Germany match was a sight to behold! With similarly placed seeds, everyone expected both teams to fight tooth and nail in order to gain an advantage over their rival.

From the very beginning, the teams didn't fear to show their preferred skill sets. While the United Kingdom banned a Long Note pick and picked a Rice one subsequently, Germany did the exact opposite. These biases were shown all throughout the match, as the teams stuck to their strong suits.

The match then began with [seatrus - Raindrop](https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/2119535#mania/4452365) where Germany managed to squeeze their first point thanks to their consistency despite the early miss. Little did they know this aforementioned consistency was going to be what would uplift their lead for the rest of the match! The advantage Germany gained thanks to their LN picks and ::{ flag=DE }:: [TsukiyaWhiskers](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/12598261)' amazing performance throughout the match would unfortunately seal the deal as team United Kingdom was not able to maintain their leads.

Alas, this was no stomp by any stretch of the imagination. The United Kingdoms's performance was admirable, and while they weren't able to secure a point, they managed to put Germany on check more than a few times. [Y.W - Freshness Vacation](https://osu.ppy.sh/beatmapsets/2119550#mania/4452388) was a testament to that.

Shout-outs to ::{ flag=DE }:: [sinkip](https://osu.ppy.sh/users/4373641) for [playing the entire match with a BMS controller](https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2039250337?t=04h05m49s)!
