Ramblings. You've been warned.
Don't forget to let the characters have social interactions like normal everyday people do. Go to lunch, have parties, do things to unwind. These need to be entertaining in some way, of course. If possible, best to let them be entertaining via a variety of methods, whether that be just very funny, or minigames, or worked into "levels" etc. I hate the way most games are just so predictable about what's going to happen. There's a level. You do the activity you always do to finish it (killing stuff, etc) then there's cutscenes, or you are in a safe area to do the other crap. I want to embed the idea that anything can happen anywhere. You might have a scene during a mission. Your bedroom could be invaded. You can go to lunch and find it to set the stage for an activity. You don't always just go to a terminal to buy supplies. The supplies come from a variety of places. Clearly, this game isn't going to represent "fine-tuned" play in a way that some big corporation would design their games so that X% time players are shooting stuff balanced by a smaller X% time they're in the hub upgrading etc before going out again to kill stuff. Mix up the flow of when rewards come to encourage the player to explore new things. (Bosses won't just always drop the reward. Maybe you've got to do something that MAKES A LITTLE MORE GODDAMNED SENSE to get the reward and that was precipitated by killing the boss.
I tried to just make this page with a title but no content here. The system wouldn't let me. It demanded I "Please fill in the field." So I knocked up its mom.
That doesn't even really make sense. Point is, I don't like being told what to do.
Sometimes github is a dink when it means to be all sleek and minimalist.
